BMF May 2011

This weekend we headed back to Peterborough for another BMF show.

This was the biggest show they've done with ticket sales up 66% from last year.

All the big names were there from Honda, Ducati, Suzuki etc, Kawasaki were there too but sadly with no bikes!

We had the usual pose pictures

I found my favourite of them all, Ducati's 848 in matt black, so nice...

Wall of death was back

Speedway

And thoughout the weekend there were some excellent bands on including a status quo tribute and a SKA band, never seen a SKA band but was worth it, excellent fun.

We even had enough time for a few hangovers!

Over the weekend, we took part in the Moped Enduro again

Great fun as always, the bike ran well despite the air filter getting damaged and sucking in all the dust off the track! Carb will need a good clean, and I don't even want to guess whats in the engine!

Those who read the BMF testing post will surely be waiting for an update on our upgrades, which I am pleased to say worked well.

The knobbled tyres got some cracking grip at the start of the races where the track was still wet, I have never ridden on them before and it took a bit of getting used too. I am used to having the bike planted on the ground, but the new tyres made the bike very twitchy, but after a few laps we got used to them.

And the 3 litre fuel tank we fitted was just about big enough to complete each 1 1/2 hour race, literally, and by the end of both races the tank was empty, with the bike running on what was left in the fuel lines.

We were running well, keeping very good pace with many other bikes, which led to some competition

We finished 28th out of 65 overall and 20th from 39 in our class. Which is an improvement again, last time out was 37th overall. There was another Gilera Runner out on track who finished 17th overall after clocking up 15 laps more than us over the 3 hours of racing. We'll get there eventually! :)

BMF Pre-season testing!

We are attempting the BMF Moped Enduro again (14th & 15th May), its been a while because Septembers race was cancelled.

Once again we haven't left much time to prepare but its never let us down in the past.

Last time we raced we emptied the fuel tank afterwards and found a lot of unused fuel we had been carrying around all weekend, so our biggest alteration was removing the standard road going fuel tank (11.5 Litres I believe), and replaced it with a new 3 litre go kart tank, which we expect will require a mid race refuel.

Space for old tank

New tank under seat

Other alterations, are some knobbly tyres! At last!

Not the ones we wanted, but they seem to work pretty well. Narrower than previous which makes the bike pretty twitchy. It may of been our test track (a gulley) but the front seemed very easy to lock, I guess practice will solve that.

Testing got underway, we have two new riders this time out who have little experience on a 'powered' bike, so they took most of the runs

slow and steady wins the day... apparently

There was a big crowd too

Even the press were onsite

Joe, One of the more experienced riders testing those knobblys...

Fairings need bolting back on, we need most of them on to protect the cooling system, but others we have managed to remove especially around the old fuel tank.

We finsihed 37th from 65 last time, mainly because of lack of grip in the early stages. Hopefully we can find the grip quicker this time round.

Any useful advice for racing on knobblys is more than welcome.

Red Marley 2011

I rode to Red Marley this year with Thumper and Katana of TBF but well known on here too. We also met up with Ses310 (TBF) and his girlfriend who had driven there.

The event pits pre 1970 classic dirt bikes against a monster hill in the wilds of Worcestershire. Always a popoular event locally and this year the very resonable £7 gate entry went at least in part to Help for Hereos

The bikes race in a variety of catorgories and engine sizes in groups of four with the fastest two making it through to the next round. Riders from 16 to 75(!) take place and the roar of brit bikes on open pipes and the crackling of Chezch two-strokes feels the air. All this as the sweet smell of Castrol hangs in the air...brilliant.

The official website will give the details...

Bike name - Valkarie...so what does it mean??

Honda's nega flat six cruiser carries the name Valkyrie.

http://www.motorcyclenews.com/upload/817/images/aHONDAF6CVALKRIEX4-01.jpg
Honda's F6C in action

An impressive sounding name, but what does it actually mean...

Well according to the online Britanic Concise dictionary:

In Germanic religion, any of a group of maidens sent by Odin to select slain warriors worthy of a place in Valhalla. They rode to the battlefield on horses or, in some accounts, flew through the air and sea. Some had the power to cause the death of warriors they disliked; others guarded the lives and ships of those they favoured. According to various myths, they were either purely supernatural or human with supernatural powers; they were associated with fairness, brightness, and gold as well as with bloodshed.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/48/Walkyrien_by_Emil_Doepler.jpg/779px-Walkyrien_by_Emil_Doepler.jpg

Meanwhile on good old Wikipedia:

In Norse mythology, a valkyrie (from Old Norse valkyrja "chooser of the slain") is one of a host of female figures who decide who will die in battle. The valkyries bring their chosen to the afterlife hall of the slain, Valhalla, ruled over by the god Odin, where the deceased warriors become einherjar. There, when the einherjar are not preparing for the events of Ragnarök, the valkyries bear them mead. Valkyries also appear as lovers of heroes and other mortals, where they are sometimes described as the daughters of royalty, sometimes accompanied by ravens, and sometimes connected to swans.

Valkyries are attested in the Poetic Edda, a book of poems compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources; the Prose Edda and Heimskringla (by Snorri Sturluson), and Njáls saga, a Saga of Icelanders, all written in the 13th century. They appear throughout the poetry of skalds, in a 14th century charm, and in various runic inscriptions.

The Old English cognate terms wælcyrge and wælcyrie appear in several Old English manuscripts, and scholars have explored whether the terms appear in Old English by way of Norse influence, or reflect a tradition also native among the Anglo-Saxon pagans. Scholarly theories have been proposed about the relation between the valkyries, the norns, the dísir, Germanic seeresses, and shieldmaidens. Archaeological excavations throughout Scandinavia have uncovered amulets theorized as depicting valkyries. In modern culture, valkyries have been the subject of works of art, musical works, video games and poetry.

So it is approriate then that one of the most spectacular aircraft of all time also carried the name 'Valkarie'

What an amazing aircraft.
Yes...I am a bit bored this evening!

Good points! 10 days across Europe, roughly 2300 ish miles planned, 7 countries, Stelvio pass, Fluela Pass, Furka pass, and toll roads banned.

Bad points! G2Ms Fireblade has a dodgy 2nd gear, my ZX6Rs brake pads still need changing, and Mads's GSXR6's tyres aren't looking to healthy.
